Today was a very long day…..

Ricky’s retinoblastoma diagnosis has been confirmed, and the oncologist has classified it as Grade "D" (on a scale from A to E, with E being the most severe). Despite the size of the tumor and the fact that it has spread beyond his retina and started to "seed," the doctors are very optimistic. They believe we have a good chance not only to save Ricky’s eye but also to preserve his vision.

The treatment plan involves intra-arterial chemotherapy, where the medication is delivered directly to the tumor. This is a major advantage, as it is far more effective while greatly reducing the harsh side effects of traditional chemotherapy. Ricky received his first dose this morning, and although his eye is a little sore, he’s been incredibly brave and is in great spirits. He had a bit of a tough time waking up from the sedation, but after about six hours, he finally came around.

We’ll be back next week for another round of chemo and an MRI. After that, we’ll be making trips to Miami twice a month for treatments and tests for the next 4 to 8 months, possibly up to a year.

There is a potential hereditary factor in Ricky’s cancer, so genetic testing has been ordered. Depending on the results, we may need to have his twin brother, Johnny, tested as well.

We’re taking things one day at a time. This journey won’t be easy, but the love and support from all of you have been overwhelming. We are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you, and your kindness means the world to us.
