Our Road Trip to Miami for Ricky’s First Full Chemo Treatment

Tomorrow, we begin a significant journey—not just the physical drive from Orlando to Miami, but an emotional one as well. Ricky, our brave little warrior, is set to receive his first full chemotherapy treatment for retinoblastoma.

The Drive Down
We’ll be packing up the car early in the morning, snacks, toys, and all the essentials in tow, making the familiar drive to Miami. It’s a bit surreal to think that what once might have been a fun family road trip is now a necessary trek for Ricky’s care. The drive, though long, gives us time as a family to reflect, to gather strength, and to prepare mentally for what lies ahead. Ricky, as always, will probably keep things light-hearted—he has a knack for doing that even in the toughest times.

Checking In
When we arrive in Miami, we’ll head straight to the hospital to get Ricky checked in. He’s been through this before, but this is his first full dose, and the stakes feel higher. We’re trying to stay positive, leaning on the amazing support system of doctors, nurses, and specialists who have been with us since the diagnosis; as well as the loving support of all of you.

Tuesday Morning: The Treatment
Tuesday morning is when the real challenge begins. Ricky will be receiving his chemotherapy bright and early. Watching him go through this is one of the hardest things as a parent, but I know he’s in the best hands. The plan is for him to be in the ICU overnight, where he’ll be monitored closely. The thought of him spending the night there makes our hearts ache, but it’s necessary to ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

The Road to Recovery
If all goes well, Ricky will be discharged on Wednesday. While the treatment itself is difficult, this is just one step on the road to recovery. We’ll be bringing him back home to Orlando, and as always, we’ll take things one day at a time.

This trip is just another chapter in Ricky’s fight. It’s hard to think of what he’s going through at such a young age, but his resilience is what keeps us all going. We’ll update again once we’re back home, grateful for every moment, every step forward.
